What is interesting is that in all but one occurrence, satan has the definite article attached: “the satan”. This indicates that “the satan” is a title, not a personal name. Satan is not who he is, but what he is. He does not merit a name, and in antiquity, not to have a name was to be reduced to virtual nonexistence.

- Victor Hamilton was my college Bible professor. It’s cool to see him being quoted on tumblr.

Our fear is that if we give into hope, we might get hurt if the things we admit we desire don’t come true. But the truth is, apathy is not a shield that saves us. It’s a blanket that suffocates and eventually costs us the heart we’re trying to protect.

To linger in the observation of things other than the self implies a profound conviction of their worth.

Imagine a body of believers that came to church ready to give, not to receive. What a community that would be! We shouldn’t come to church for a spiritual top-up; we go to church to top someone else up!
